More snow and ice forecast as wintry conditions threaten disruption across Scotland

A yellow warning for snow covers places such as Edinburgh, the Borders and Lanarkshire and has been extended further into Monday while it’s a warning for snow and ice in the Highlands, Ayrshire, Dumfries and Galloway as well as in parts of the central belt.

With many people returning to work for the first time after the Christmas break, it means the early morning commute could be hit by delays and disruption with people urged to check their services before travelling.

Scotland has managed to avoid the heavy snow that covered parts of England over the weekend thus far, but the warnings remain in place that there could still be some on the way over the course of Monday.

Deputy chief forecaster Mike Silverstone said: “The low pressure that brought the snow and heavy rain in the south will move out to the east by Monday. This will allow a cold northerly flow to become established again for much of next week.

“This will bring further sleet, snow and hail showers to northern Scotland in particular, but possibly to some other areas, especially near western coasts, with a fair amount of dry and bright weather elsewhere.

“Temperatures will remain below average, with widespread frost and the threat of ice at times. Some areas, especially in the north, may struggle to get above freezing for several days.”
