Area basketball roundup for Dec. 12: TDA girls race past Scotland/Menno behind strong start
TRIPP, S.D. — In an early battle of 1-0 squads, Tripp-Delmont/Armour held off Scotland/Menno for a 41-32 victory in girls basketball action on Thursday night.
TDA took control with a 16-7 first quarter and maintained that advantage with leads of 26-13 at halftime and 34-23 entering the fourth quarter.
Kinley Spaans put up 21 points, seven rebounds and five steals to pace the Nighthawks. Marissa Leonard tacked on 10 points and three steals, and Mia Reiner offered six points, six rebounds and six steals in the winning effort.
For the Trappers, Trinity Bietz scored 15 points and Lexie McNinch had eight points.
TDA (2-0) hosts Parkston on Tuesday, Dec. 17, in Armour. Meanwhile, Scotland/Menno (1-1) plays its third game of the opening week, hosting Alcester-Hudson on Saturday in Scotland.
Stellar start propels James Valley Christian over Mitchell Christian
HURON, S.D. — A 24-1 first-quarter margin set the tone early for James Valley Christian, taking down Mitchell Christian boys basketball 64-24 in both teams’ season opener on Thursday night.
The Golden Eagles rebounded in the second quarter, scoring 15 points and pulled to within eight of the Vikings’ lead at halftime. It was a close as they came, as JVC kept Mitchell Christian in check for the remainder of the game.
Silas Holdeman led Golden Eagle scorers with eight points on 4-of-8 shooting with four steals. Luke Mentele grabbed 11 rebounds and seven points, and Syver Enga tallied five points, four rebounds and a steal. No stats were reported for James Valley Christian.
Mitchell Christian (0-1) travels on the road to take on Dell Rapids St. Mary on Tuesday, Dec. 17.
Thursday’s girls leaders
- Lila Vanderlei scored 14 points as Avon defeated Colome 49-12. Raelynn Kingsley had eight points and seven rebounds for Colome in the loss.
Thursday’s boys leaders
- Tyce Feistner posted 21 points, three assists and three steals, while Brady Fox added 12 points and four rebounds for Mount Vernon/Plankinton in a 59-39 win over Kimball/White Lake.
- Aziah Meyer netted 19 points with three rebounds and four steals, leading Avon to a 56-17 win over Colome. Jonah Musser scored 12 points for the Cowboys in the loss.
- A 16-5 second quarter margin powered Tripp-Delmont Armour past Scotland/Menno 65-56. Isaac Wunder netted 24 points and nine rebounds, and Riley Spaans added 21 points. The Trappers’ Izayah Ulmer had 12 points.
