ITV Racing is back Sunday with sport from Huntingdon and Kelso starting here with the Grade 2 Peterborough Chase over 2m4f. A decent renewal. PROTEKTORAT really should be too good for this field off a mark of 166 and giving between 3lb to 6lb away to his rivals. This year’s Ryanair hero returned with a fair sixth in the excellent Paddy Power Gold Cup where I wasn’t sure he totally enjoyed going down the inside. There should be a good pace for him to just sit off in this small field with both Nickle Back and Ginny’s Destiny happy to make the running. Harry Skelton rides for his brother Dan.
The Borders National Handicap Chase over an extended 4m. FLOWER OF SCOTLAND could be absolutely chucked in if anywhere near his best for Sandy Thomson and Henry Brooke. The defending champion won this rated 114 in 2023 but is now just rated 107 which clearly shows what a great chance he has. The problem is connections are out of form and Flower of Scotland was tailed off at Carlisle last time!
14:25 Huntingdon – Milldam
A handicap hurdle over 2m. Some promising types here and ground could be key. Go To War has had wind surgery relatively recently and will not want too much rain. MILLDAM is the one for me. He goes in deep ground should it rain a lot and he’s promising, as a young four-time winner already. Obviously he’s been off the track since March, but when last seen he defeated a useful sort in Playful Saint at Stratford and a rise of 4lb is not crazy.
Here’s a handicap chase over 2m1f. TOMMY’S OSCAR goes well at this track and he should be in the mix off a mark of 156 for Ann Hamilton and Sean Quinlan. The nine-year-old returned this term with a reasonable third at this track in October and that run suggested he just had a few cobwebs to blow away. Hopefully will be much fitter here.
A handicap chase over nearly 3m. This is wide open. I’ll take a chance with MIXEDWAVE bouncing back to some form for Pam Sly and Paul O’Brien. My selection goes on any ground and it’s really just a case of whether he can bounce back to being in good shape after a dismal run at Southwell last time. He bled from the nose that day and so the handicapper has not dropped him, and clearly that is not a good sign. However, a mark of 100 is workable and his does stay well. A few quid each-way in hope.
A novices’ limited handicap chase over nearly 3m. WHISTLE STOP TOUR is unexposed at this distance and might have more to give. The Lucinda Russell-trained runner was a fine third at Ayr in a big field over an extended 3m back in April and is just a couple of pounds higher now off 124. He kept on fairly well that day which suggests this distance is what he is crying out for. Derek Fox rides.
A mares’ bumper over 2m. Many capable of improving here so a bit of guesswork. I’m going to chance newcomer THREE RUNS MARY for Olly Murphy and Gavin Sheehan. The stable is powerful and this filly cost 105,000 euros as a 3yo which is more than most of these. The daughter of Flemensfirth, out of a King’s Theatre mare, is bred to go a bit so watch the market for any positives.
So best of luck, and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
