Liverpool fans lose it as Andy Robertson gives away controversial penalty

JUST a matter of days ago Andy Robertson was the saviour of Scotland.

But back on club duty with Liverpool, he was targeted by Reds fans after giving away a penalty.

The Scotland captain smashed home a bullet header to ensure the national team ended their Nations League campaign on a high with two wins from two.

It means Steve Clarke‘s squad now have a play-off in March to look ahead to, in which we will face Greece with our place in the top tier of the competition on the line.

After his late heroics in dark blue, Robertson was back in action for the Anfield side on their travels to Southampton.

Arne Slot‘s men took the lead through Dominik Szoboszlai on the half hour mark but 12 minutes later, Adam Armstrong had struck from the penalty spot to equalise.

And many Liverpool supporters were quick to point the finger at Robertson, who had conceded the foul that led to the pen.

However, some fans sympathised with him to a degree as the decision wasn’t without controversy.

Robertson himself was furious with the referee.

That’s because the officials in the VAR room admitted they couldn’t overturn whistler Samuel Barrott’s call on the field due to having no “conclusive evidence” of where the foul actually occured.

Robertson’s foot looks to be right on the line (if at all) when the contact is made – indeed the contact itself looks to be outside the box.

But regardless of the fairness of the decision, it prompted several supporters to vent their frustration at the Scotland defender.

Some even cried for the left-back to be SOLD.

One fan wrote on Twitter (X): “Robertson is beyond washed. [Bukayo] Saka gave this guy an early retirement package but he didn’t receive the signal.”

Another said: “Yet again Robertson with a rash tackle. Need a top class left back in the summer.”

A third commented: “Robertson has to be backup or just moved on. This season and last he has regressed.”

A fourth blasted: “Why’s Andrew Robertson still starting for my club?”

“I’m losing patience with Robertson”, said another fan.

While this supporter remarked: “Andy Robertson has been an incredible servant to Liverpool but he is past it at this point. It’s time to find a new left-back.”

One fan felt more blame lay on Robbo’s team mate – former Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk.

“Genuinely don’t understand how Robertson is getting most of the blame here VVD was shocking there,” they said.

And others did comment on the fact the decision seemed unjust.

“Horrendous play from Robertson but that’s absolutely outside the box,” came one response.

“I’m sorry but Robertson’s challenge was clearly outside the box, I don’t understand how you watch that in the VAR booth and call it a penalty,” said another.

In the end, Liverpool won the game 3-2 thanks to a second half double from Mo Salah, including a penalty kick.
