Aberdeen ace’s savage reply as Nicky Devlin snubbed by Scotland for Celtic star

RARELY does a Scotland starting line-up please everyone.

And last night’s XI that took to the field against Croatia prompted a savage response from an Aberdeen star who was raging that his clubmate missed out.

Steve Clarke‘s men won 1-0 against Luka Modric and co, thanks to a late winner from super sub John McGinn.

But one man who didn’t play his part (on the pitch at least) was Aberdeen defender Nicky Devlin.

The 31-year-old, who received his maiden call-up last month for the games against Croatia and Portgual, was on the bench at Hampden as Celtic full-back Anthony Ralston retained his starting place.

Ralston, 26, has been the first-choice right-back since the injuries to Aaron Hickey and Nathan Patterson.

But Devlin’s team mate at Pittodrie, Portuguese forward Duk, clearly believes he should be the man for the job.

The Aberdeen Instagram account posted a picture of Devlin in his Scotland gear before the game.

Their caption read: “Nicky Devlin starts on the bench for Scotland at Hampden this evening.

“Best of luck to Nicky and to the Scotland national team.”

Duk wasn’t happy however, and responded in the comments by saying “Boooooo”, with a thumbs down emoji.

Indeed, many Aberdeen fans shared his sentiment.

Lawrence Shankland looks UNHAPPY but he’s still Scotland’s most natural striker, say Bill Leckie & Robert Grieve

One said: “Well said Duk he should be starting shouldn’t he.”

A second replied said: “Duk the goat.”

More unhappy comments from the Dons faithful followed.

One said: “It’s an utter joke.”

Another said: “Ralston’s barely played for Celtic this season while Devlin is not only a regular he’s also in the best form of his career. Zero reason whatsoever for Ralston to start over him.”

Meanwhile, Scotland have received a boost ahead of Monday’s final Nations League fixture against Poland, with the Polish squad decimated by injuries.

Boss Michal Probierz said after their 5-1 loss to Portugal: “In 20 years of coaching I have never ever been in a match where as many things that could go wrong did go wrong.

“We now have a lot of injuries and we need to think about replacements.

“As for the incident with Karol Swiderski, I can only apologise to him. It was a human error, mistakes happen.

“We showed until half-time that we can really play very well, but nobody gives points for that.

“But our injuries changed the game.

“It’s hard to win under such circumstances.

“But it’s a lesson in humility for the players and me. You have to be able to accept these moments in football.

“We now need to prepare properly for Scotland. I hope our fans will come out and support us in this match because we need them.

“If you get knocked down, you have to be able to get up.”
