Scotland’s richest man buys historic Loch Ness pub – Scottish Business News
Scotland’s wealthiest individual, Danish billionaire Anders Holch Polvsen, has expanded his Scottish property portfolio with the acquisition of the historic Dores Inn on the shores of Loch Ness. The purchase was made through WildLand, a conservation and hospitality company owned by Polvsen.
The Dores Inn, a beloved pub and restaurant located approximately 10 miles south of Inverness, has a rich history dating back to at least 1967 when it was visited by Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. The establishment has long been a popular destination for both locals and tourists, offering stunning views of Loch Ness.
Tim Kirkwood, CEO of WildLand, commented on the acquisition: “The Dores Inn is a cherished pub and dining venue situated in one of the most scenic locations by Loch Ness. When we heard that long-term sustainability of business at the site could be enhanced through investment in the premises, it became clear that we should look at solutions that will align well with the interests of our business and the local community alike.”
WildLand plans to undertake a significant renovation project for the inn and its surrounding area. The pub is expected to close for approximately two years, with a projected reopening in 2026 or 2027. During this time, the company aims to address various community concerns, including parking issues, public restroom facilities, and access to a nearby beach.
Mr. Kirkwood emphasised the company’s commitment to the project, stating: “We are now committing a substantial programme of investment in the fabric of the premises with a view to getting the business back up and running there as a pub and restaurant in a very special location.”
This acquisition adds to Polvsen’s already extensive land holdings in Scotland, which include vast tracts in Sutherland, Lochaber, and the Cairngorms. The billionaire, whose wealth largely stems from the retail sector, has an estimated fortune exceeding £6 billion and has been named Scotland’s richest person for the third consecutive year.
The purchase of the Dores Inn aligns with WildLand’s existing interests in the area, as the company already owns the nearby 300-year-old Aldourie Castle and 500 acres of surrounding land and forest.
As the renovation project progresses, WildLand has pledged to work closely with the local community, addressing concerns and sharing detailed plans once a full review has been completed. This development represents another significant investment in Scottish hospitality and conservation by one of the country’s most prominent landowners.
