Four Olympians named in Scotland’s Athlete of the Year

Four Olympic medalists are among those vieing for the headline prizes at this year’s Scottish Sports Awards.

Cyclists Neah Evans and Jack Carlin, as well as triathlete Beth Potter and swimmer Duncan Scott, are nominated for the female and male athlete of the year awards.

Scotland women’s cricket captain Kathryn Bryce and golfer Robert MacIntyre are also in contention.

Hope Gordon (canoeing), Samantha Kinghorn (athletics) and Faye Rogers (swimming) will contest the female Para-athlete award.

And Stephen Clegg (swimming), Fin Graham (cycling) and Stephen McGuire (boccia) are nominated in the male category.

In the team of the year category, Celtic’s women’s side have been nominated after winning their maiden SWPL title and becoming the first Scottish side to qualify for the Champions League group stages.

They are up against United Rugby Championship winners Glasgow Warriors and the Scotland women’s cricket team, who qualified for the T20 World Cup.

There is also a ‘Moment of the Year’ award open to public voting, which includes Glasgow’s URC win and MacIntyre’s Scottish Open win in July.

Also up for the public award is Jasmin Paris in the 100-mile Barkley Marathons; Andy Murray at the Olympics; Scott Brash winning team showjumping gold in Paris; and Ben Sandilands for his world-breaking 1500m run at the Paralympics.

Voters can also choose Josh Kerr winning gold at the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow and Gordon Reid winning Paralympics tennis doubles gold.
