In a bizarre post on his Twitter (X) account, the 78-year-old made reference to Scottish football during a call to action to people in the swing state of North Carolina.

Mr Trump tweeted: “NORTH CAROLINA: TODAY IS THE LAST DAY TO REQUEST A BALLOT.

“Reply #stop to opt-out.”

That alone is nothing untoward but when you consider that Trump tagged the SPFL Media Watch account at the start of the post (@SPFLWatch), it becomes more bizarre.

Moreover, the graphic on the tweet shows Trump and the words ‘Too Big to Rig’, a reference to the former president’s disproved theories on voter fraud in the 2020 election.

As one observer put it: “I wonder who they thought they were tagging!”

Others jumped onto the tweet as clear evidence the 45th president of the United States is in fact a bug fan of our game.

Another said: “Trump and Scottish Football Twitter is football heritage.”

For other footie fans, it was a chance for them to ask Trump how he would make Scottish Football Great Again.

This fan said: “Will you sort out the VAR situation in Scotland if elected?”

Another said: “If elected would you be able to convince the SFA to increase the number of teams in the SPFL to 16 or 18 teams please?”

And a third said: “To get my vote you have to agree Killie Pies are the best pies in football.”

While another fan took the opportunity to ask about a talking point from the weekend’s action.

They asked: “Do you think St Mirren should have got a penalty on Sunday?”
