Rangers boss Philippe Clement spotted at Scotland vs Portugal clash

THERE was a famous face spotted in the stands at Hampden for Scotland’s Nations League clash with Portugal.

Rangers boss Philippe Clement was one of the 50,000 in attendance along with interim chairman John Gilligan at the national stadium to see Cristiano Ronaldo and Co face Steve Clarke‘s men.

But he wasn’t there to watch the former Manchester United and Real Madrid supertstar in action.

He has been keeping a close eye on his Rangers stars who are involved with Scotland instead.

Star defender John Souttar kept his spot for the match after returning to the fold against Croatia on Saturday.

The centre-back lost his place at Euro 2024 despite being named in the manager’s initial squad ahead of the tournament.

And he was an unused sub in both games against Poland and Portgal last month.

But he is back involved with the team this international break in the absence of Kieran Tierney, Jack Hendry and Scott McKenna.

The 28-year-old has started every game for the Gers this season and is now hoping to stay in Clarke’s team going forward.

But Souttar isn’t the only player Clement will be keeping tabs on.

Connor Barron is also at Hampden for the Nations League match following a late call-up from Clarke to replace Celtic winger James Forrest who had to pull out through injury.

Barron, who is a regular starter for the U21s, was promoted to the first team but was left on the bench against Portugal, with Scott McTominay, Billy Gilmour and Kenny McLean the preferred options in the middle for the Tartan Army boss.

His late call-up left U21s boss Scot Gemmill to make for their must-win clash with Kazakhstan earlier tonight.

Ex-Celtic youngster Daniel Kelly replaced the midfielder in the line-up, while Lennon Miller and Lyall Cameron also started in the middle.

But despite fielding a strong side for the match, the young Scots crashed to a devastating 3-2 defeat in Almaty – losing out on a place in next year’s tournament in the process.
