Scotland have lost three times out of their first three Nations League group games against Portugal, Croatia and Poland.

League A Group 1 is a tough place to be in for Scotland but it’s not like they have lost by a wide margin in each and been completely outplayed.

Each loss has only been by a single goal, losing 2-1 to Portugal in the reverse fixture last month too.

Scott McTominay put Scotland ahead inside seven minutes in Benfica and as a result they tried to hold onto that lead.

With just 31% possession though, they did invite a tonne of pressure and eventually Portugal not only got the equaliser soon after the restart, but the winner too thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo in the 88th minute.

It was a similar story against Croatia, where they took the lead, tried to hold that advantage but quickly saw an equaliser and eventually the losing goal.

They did well against Poland, coming from 2-0 down to get what seemed like a vital point as they headed into the final minutes of additional time, as Billy Gilmour and McTominay got a goal each in the second half.

But in the 97th minute Nicola Zalewski scored Poland’s second penalty of the game to seal all three points in front of a stunned Hampden Park.

They will feel hard done by, by that result of course, the foul was as clear as day while the penalty itself escaped underneath the hands of Angus Gunn, to sum up a torrid day for Scotland.

But they’ve shown they’re capable against these nations and could pull something off here against the odds.

Portugal on the other hand have all the confidence going into this clash, winning three from three.

Beating Croatia and Scotland 2-1 at home before beating Poland 3-1 on Saturday.

With Ronaldo amongst the goals in the Nations League he seems fired up to keep adding to his incredible tally and could make it four goals from four Nations League appearances this season.
