Peter Cormack dies as tributes pour in for ex-Scotland, Hibs and Liverpool star

SCOTTISH football is in mourning today after it was revealed that former Hibs and Liverpool hero Peter Cormack has died at the age of 78.

The midfielder won a raft of major honours at Anfield and was revered at Easter Road, where he made more than 200 appearances across two spells at the club.

Cormack won a total of nine caps for his country at a time when our midfielders were the envy of the world.

His trophy haul at Liverpool included two league titles in the old first divison, an FA Cup and the 1972-73 Uefa cup.

He then went on to become a well-known manager in Scotland and elsewhere, managing the likes of Partick Thistle, Cowdenbeath and Morton – in addition to spells managing in Greece and Botswana in Africa.

His son, also Peter, is a well-known figure around the Scottish football scene after stints at various clubs.

His successful period at Liverpool ended in 1976 when he was sold to Bristol City, for whom he won the Anglo-Scottish Cup in 1978.

Cormack had the distinction of playing under iconic Liverpool manager Bill Shankly and his brother Bob at Hibs.

Bill Shankly labelled him the missing piece of the jigsaw as he joined the Anfield club, with Cormack later recalling: “That July morning in 1972 I sat nervously, twitching like a wet behind the ears teenager about to set out on his football career.

“I was nothing like the battle hardened pro with 10 years’ first team experience and several Scotland caps that I was.”
