Greggs wins planning battle to open shop in Scotland’s busiest train station

GREGGS have won a planning battle to open their first store inside Scotland’s busiest train stations.

Bakery bosses had a bid to open a chain inside Glasgow Central Station knocked back by planning chiefs in February.

Council officials knocked back plans for the popular chain to open up in a unit formerly used by Patisserie Valerie and Shelter Scotland.

Glasgow City Council’s planning committee said that the application wouldn’t respect the appearance of a listed building.

But Greggs has come back out on top, after been given the green light for a new application.

The sausage roll supremos resubmitted their application to open a shop in the station.

A number of changes were made to the planning application so that the appearance of the unit is maintained.

Any fixtures and fittings made to the soon-to-be bakery have to match the building and fridges placed against windows have to be clear backed.

The firm also has to keep the windows of the unit clear and aren’t allowed to place any ads in the windows.

Since the plans were approved in August, new signage has appeared outside the unit while it is set up.

Greggs-branded banners have covered the doors and windows and read: “Something cool is coming, the wait is nearly over.

“Can’t wait? Neither can we?”

It means hungry commuters passing through Central Station will soon be able to tuck into some baked treats while heading for their train.

It comes a year after Greggs had success at another major transport hub.

We previously told how the chain had been given the green light to open an outlet inside Glasgow Queen Street station.

Planning chiefs approved an application for the outlet, which is being set up inside one of the station’s vacant units.

It comes as several commercial outlets have opened up inside the rail hub after its massive refit.

The news of the Queen Street Greggs came as Glasgow was named the Greggs capital of the UK.

Last year Glaswegians had 54 Greggs across the city, more than any other city in Britain.
