On the opening day of ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, Pakistan were given a reality check as they suffered a eight-wicket defeat at the hands of Scotland. The 12th-ranked Scotland chased down the target of 133 with two overs to spare and eight wickets in hand.
No six in Pakistan’s innings
Fatima Sana won the toss and opted to bat first. Pakistan suffered a mini collapse in the powerplay overs. Olivia Bell struck twice whereas Kathryn Bryce got rid of opener Sadaf Shamas. Sidra Amin and Nida Dar were dismissed for four runs each.
Gull Feroza could not convert start into big knock and was dismissed lbw by Abtaha Maqsood. Muneeba Ali and Omaima Sohail steadied the ship. The partnership was broken by Katherine Fraser in the 11th over. Muneeba scored 27 runs from 22 balls. Maqsood returned and dismissed Omaima who scored 30 runs from 29 balls.
In the penultimate over, Omaima departed after scoring 30 runs from 29 balls. Skipper Fatima’s cameo of unbeaten 14-ball 20 and Iram Javed’s nine-ball 12 took Pakistan’s score to 132/9. In the last over, Kathryn struck twice. She bagged three wickets in three overs. No six was hit in Pakistan’s innings.
Openers lead Scotland home
Scotland’s run chase got off to a good start. Saskia Horley hit her for two fours in the over. After powerplay overs, Scotland were 38 for no loss. The openers Saskia and Sarah Bryce continued to cruise. While Saskia scored freely, Sarah struggled to find the boundary or rotate strike regularly. In the 12th over, Nashra Sandhu broke the partnership. Saskia scored 48 runs from 42 balls including six fours.

Sarah hit the first six of the match in the 15th over. She accelerated and got to his half-century in the 16th over with a six. The opener took 45 balls to reach the milestone. In the 18th over, Kathryn was run out by Nida when the scores were level. Megan McColl ended the run chase with a single. Sarah remained unbeaten for 60 runs from 52 balls. Her knock featured three fours and a couple of sixes.

Sri Lanka’s easy win over Bangladesh
In the other warm-up game of the day, Asian champions Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by 33 runs. Hasini Perera top-scored with 39-ball 43 and helped Sri Lanka psot 143/7. In the run chase, Bangladesh’s top-order failed. Bangladesh managed to post 110/9 and lost by 33 runs. Sugandika Kumari claimed three wickets for eight runs.
