Playing with Andy Murray ‘a dream come true’ for Bob MacIntyre

Scottish golf star Robert MacIntyre admitted teeing up alongside Andy Murray was a dream come true for him – and said he’ll be picking the tennis legend’s brains for tips on how to take his career to the next level.

MacIntyre and Murray played at Wentworth in the celebrity Pro-Am tournament before the BMW PGA Championship takes place this week.

Recently retired Wimbledon champion Murray has taken up golf as a hobby since hanging up his racquet and impressed MacIntyre round 18 holes.

The world number 16 golfer said: “It was like a dream come true for me. He’s a sporting idol of mine and it was a special day.

“If I achieve half of what Andy Murray achieved in his sport then I will have overachieved in mine.

“When a Scottish person does so well the whole of Scotland gets behind them and I am no different.

“When Andy was winning Wimbledon I watched every shot at my mum and dad’s in Oban.

“I would love to have half the career he had in my sport but there is so much work that goes into it.

“Going forward for me it is about trying to pick his brains because our sports are probably about as close as you can get.

“Obviously the mechanics are completely different but we are individual [competitors] we have our own teams [working with us].

“It’s as close as you’re going to get to the game of golf.”

MacIntyre enjoyed a successful first season competing in America on the PGA Tour – finishing 17th in the FedEx Cup rankings and winning the Canadian Open, as well as the Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club in July.

After climbing into the world top 20 he is setting his sights high for next year.

The 28-year-old said: “The goal is obviously to get back on the Ryder Cup team and to try and win golf tournaments every week.

“That’s my job but there is so much that goes into winning them. It is just about giving myself as many chances as I can.

“I had one big aim before a major and that was the Scottish Open. You never know how many real chances you are going to have to win that and thankfully I got another chance this year and took it.

“This [the BMW PGA Championship] is the flagship event on the tour so this is the next one for me outside of the majors.”
