Ex-Celtic favourite lined up for sensational MLS move

STUART ARMSTRONG has been offered a deal to join Vancouver Whitecaps.

The Scotland midfielder has been without a club since being released by Southampton at the end of last season.

And SunSport understands the former Celtic star is wanted by the MLS club.

His former Dundee United team-mate Ryan Gauld is currently starring with the Canadian outfit.

And it’s understood Armstrong could be set to join him as one of their designated players.

The 32 year-old has been training with Premier League Brentford for the last few months as he weighed up his options.

But Armstrong could now move to the US league for the final years of his career.

He was part of Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad for the Euros and is in the Hall of Fame with over 50 caps.

Gauld has been called up to the Scotland squad by Steve Clarke and could be set to win his first cap in this week’s Nations League games against Poland and Portugal, although his reaction to being selected wasn’t exactly over the top.

He said: “The squad was announced at around midday in Scotland and I knew when it was being announced, so I woke up in the middle of the night and said, ‘okay, call-up’ – and I went back to bed.

“It’s a nice feeling to be recognised again and get a chance to train with everyone and be around it.

“It’s going to be a good week and I’m looking forward to it.”

The Scottish links in Vancouver run deep, as veteran striker Kenny Miller spent two years at the club before his 2014 return to Rangers, and ex-Falkirk gaffer Martin Rennie also spent two years there as manager.

Meanwhile, Scotland fans hoping to catch Armstrong and Gauld in action this week could be set for disappointment.

As it stands, neither game against Poland or Portugal is scheduled to be shown on TV.

Broadcaster Viaplay own the rights to national team games for the next four years and are in negotiations with Uefa over their access.

The Nordic company stepped back from the UK TV market last year and handed over the domestic coverage to Premier Sports.

However the replacement broadcaster has currently lined up La Liga re-runs on Thursday and Sunday, rather than the Nations League crunch clashes.
