Rangers hero Allan McGregor wins star-studded event at Donald Trump golf course

ALLAN MCGREGOR came up trumps for Rangers plenty of times during his career.

And today he bagged a victory on a golf course owned by DONALD TRUMP.

McGregor, 42, hung up his gloves at the end of the 2022/23 season.

He didn’t feel the need to announce his retirement and has kept a relatively low profile ever since he called it quits after 20 years at the top.

McGregor broke his silence on his post-football career plans last month.

He told the Golf Life YouTube channel: “If the question got asked, in terms of coaching, I feel that I want to want to do it, rather than people saying ‘you’ve got the experience, you should do it’.

“That time might come, you know, soon. But I’m just enjoying myself now.”

And thing the former Rangers and Scotland goalkeeper has been actively enjoying doing in his new-found free time is playing plenty of golf.

It seems he has quite the knack for it too – and was spotted playing a round with European Ryder Cup hero Alex Noren at the Scottish Open last summer.

McGregor entered the Luxe Scot Celebrity Pro-Am, held at Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeen today and hosted by Scots golf legend Colin Montgomerie.

The venue was opened in 2012 after much controversy over the land it was built on (and a spat with Alex Salmond), and nowadays it regularly ranks among the top 100 courses in the world.

The field featured a plethora of stars from sports and entertainment, including ex-Formula One world champion Damon Hill, former Olympian Kris Akabusi and Strictly Come Dancing favourite Anton du Beke.

Genesis lead guitarist Mike Rutherford teed it up as well and Keith Duffy and Brian McFadden, formerly of Boyzone and Westlife (now touring as a duo called Boyzlife) also took part.

Former Celtic star and Hibs boss Alan Stubbs teed it up too, as did Aberdeen icon Jim Leighton.

Other famous sporting names competed such as Chelsea hero Gianfranco Zola, former rugby star Scott Quinnell and ex-England cricket internationals Darren Gough and Steve Harmison.

But it was McGregor who came out on top, finishing with 37 points.

McGregor’s prize of silverware and a pack of golf balls was handed to him by Montgomerie and Alan Findlater, managing director of sponsors Luxe Scot.

The Ibrox fan favourite also scooped £10,000 for his chosen charity, Kilbryde Hospice.

He claimed top spot by just one point from ex-Aberdeen striker John Hewitt.

In third place was rugby union ace Ryan Wilson, formerly of Glasgow Warriors.

Wilson also placed third in the team event, playing alongside former golf pro Jean Van de Velde (who infamously suffered Open heartbreak at Carnoustie in 1999) and amateur players Caia Slater and James Slater.

Former Chelsea boss Roberti di Matteo was second in the team event with Jarmo Sandelin and amateurs Uberto Selvatico-Estense and Lawrence Blunt.

Cricket cult hero Gough won the team category with ex-pro Phillip Archer and amateurs Julian Kearny and James Noel.

Trump International is due to host the PGA Seniors Championship this weekend, with the tournament held a week after the Senior Open.

Tickets for the Legends Tour event are still available, with play commencing tomorrow and the final round on Sunday.
