Scott McKenna ‘closing in on shock move abroad as he reunites with Scotland pal’

SCOTT McKENNA is reportedly closing in on a shock move to Spain.

The Scotland international, who has been linked with both Celtic and Rangers, is currently a free agent after being released by Nottingham Forest this summer.

McKenna, 27, has been weighing up his future ever since but has now found his next move, it’s being claimed.

The left-sided defender enjoyed a spell in Denmark last season with Champions League outfit Copenhagen but he looked set to return to England after Hull City joined the race for the out-of-contract star this week.

However, it now looks like the Tigers have lost out on the centre-back as reports from Spain today suggest he is nearing a move to La Liga instead.

And it will see him link up with a familiar face next season as one of his former Scotland team-mates recently joined the club.

Spanish outlet La Provincia claim McKenna has agreed a deal with Las Palmas and is expected to be confirmed as the Gran Canaria side’s eleventh signing of the summer.

It’s where Oli McBurnie will play his football next season after he recently joined the club following his exit from Sheffield United.

Football fans were left stunned when McBurnie was linked with the shock move, with many labelling it “the most random transfer of the summer”.

He agreed a three-year deal with the club to keep him in Spain until the summer of 2027.

And now McKenna will likely join him in Spain as the report suggests it’s only a matter of time before the transfer is made official.

McKenna gave an update on his future this week and hinted that he is still searching for the right move.

Speaking to the Press and Journal, he said: “It is the first time I have been in this situation. It is a bit strange.

“You are training yourself and trying to keep fit when other teams are back on pre-season.

“The season will start for different leagues in the next week or two. I just need to trust the process and I’m sure something will come up in the next few weeks.”

The former Aberdeen defender was quizzed on transfer links to both Rangers and Celtic ahead of the Euros, and he admitted at the time that he would consider a move back to Scotland.

He said: “I am open to anything. I would never rule anything out.

“But in terms of the speculation, that’s all it’s ever been.

“It has never really gone any further than that, and until there is anything that’s more than that I don’t really have anything to think about.”
