Scotland animation outfit Axis Studios closes, 162 jobs lost

Scotland-based animation outfit Axis Studios has gone into administration, with 162 immediate job losses.

Axis was founded in 2000 and is headquartered in Glasgow, with offices in Bristol. Administrators were appointed on July 15, resulting in work all projects being halted immediately.

Axis has worked on a host of film and television projects, recently working on Channel 4’s Generation Z, Lionsgate’s Borderlands starring Cate Blanchett, and the BBC series Vigil season 2. The studio won a Royal Television Society award and an Emmy.

In a statement, Alistair McAlinden, head of Interpath Advisory in Scotland and joint administrator, said: “Axis has more recently been impacted by a decline in customer projects, as well as increases in labour costs which have resulted in severe cash flow problems.

“The directors worked tirelessly to explore alternative solutions, but ultimately had to take the difficult decision to seek the appointment of administrators.”

Four people have been retained to wind up the business, and the joint administrators are seeking operators to continue with the live projects.
