Scottish Universities: Why you should consider them and how to get funding. – Aberdeen Business News

As a journalist who’s covered the subject of education for years, it’s a pleasure to tell you: Scotland’s universities are a hidden gem for international students. With a rich history dating back centuries, and a warm welcome that’s as legendary as the country’s landscapes, Scottish higher education has a lot to offer. These establishments offer a unique blend of tradition, innovation and support for foreign students. But I should also point out from the outset that getting a place isn’t easy, there’s significant competition because of the quality of education on offer. So, you will need to give it your best shot, if it’s something that attracts you.

Some History

It’s worth knowing a bit about the history to put into context the value of the opportunity that’s available. Scotland’s universities are some of the oldest in the English-speaking world. St Andrews, founded way back in 1413, is the eldest. It’s followed by Glasgow (1451), Aberdeen (1495), and then Edinburgh (1582). These are truly ancient institutions with outstanding educational reputations. They were joined by Strathclyde (1796) and Heriot-Watt (1821) – both wonderful universities. In the 20th-century Stirling (1967) and the University of the West of Scotland (2007) came along. And since then, there have been some newer additions. I’ve created a list for you at the end of this article.

Each of these fine establishments has its own character, and they all share a commitment to academic excellence. That commitment put Scottish education on the global map several hundred years ago and continues today. But, I imagine you might be thinking: “Sounds great, but can I afford it?” Well, here’s more good news: Scotland has rolled out the welcome mat for international students with a variety of funding options. 

Funding

The British Chevening Scholarships, funded by the UK government, offer full financial support for master’s degrees. If you’re from a Commonwealth country, the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan might be your ticket. And for our friends from across the pond, the Fulbright Awards open doors for US citizens to study, lecture, or conduct research in the UK. But wait, there’s more! Many Scottish universities offer their own scholarships. Let’s take the University of Aberdeen, for example. It has an exciting range of options to attract international students. 

The Aberdeen Global Scholarship offers a £3,000 tuition fee discount for eligible postgraduate students. Undergraduates don’t need to feel left out – they could land a £5,000 discount per year. And if you’re thinking about a postgrad degree, you might qualify for up to £8,000 off your tuition, depending on where you call home.

• The Robertson Trust – Journey to Success Scholarships: Aimed at helping students overcome financial and social barriers.

• Aberdeen Medics Scholarship Fund – Gateway 2 Medicine: Supports students in the medical degree program.
• ICAS Foundation Bursary/Mentoring Support: For students planning to study accounting or finance.
• University of Aberdeen Development Trust Sports Bursary Scheme: Assists talented athletes in maintaining high sporting standards while studying.
• CB Davidson Fund: Provides financial support for postgraduate law students from outside the UK.

Aberdeen doesn’t stop at offering scholarships, though. They understand that studying abroad is a life changing adventure with some challenges along the way. That’s why they’ve set up an International Study Centre to help you settle in. Applying for a scholarship can be a real challenge. There is always a lot of competition for places at these prestigious institutions.
