Potential stumbling block emerges in potential Rangers transfer for Kenny McLean

A POTENTIAL stumbling block has emerged in Rangers’ pursuit of Scotland star Kenny McLean.

It was reported last night that the Ibrox club were interested in a summer swoop for the Norwich City midfielder.

The 32-year-old is a boyhood Gers fan and hasn’t hid his desire to one day turn out for the Light Blues.

He said in an interview with the Athletic in 2021: “I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t something I’d want to do. As a kid that’s what you want to do, play for your boyhood team.

“Right now, I’m about to play in the Premier League again, so I’m not thinking about it.

“But for me and my family, it would be pretty special. I grew up a Rangers fan, used to go to the games with my dad and as a kid in Glasgow, you support Rangers or Celtic and you want to play for one of them.

“So, I was on the better side.”

McLean has now sampled the Premier League and narrowly missed out on doing so again this season as Norwich were beaten in the play-offs.

A move back to Scottish football could be tempting then, with the Canaries set for another season in the Championship.

According to the Pink Un, the Norwich City news specialists, it will take more than tugging on McLean’s heartstrings to strike a deal with the Carrow Road club.

They say it will take a ‘substantial’ fee for Norwich to consider letting McLean leave the club.

McLean has two years left on his contract with an option for a further year.

He cost Norwich around £200,000 when he made the switch from Aberdeen in January 2018 (though he was loaned back to the Dons immediately).

Norwich stand to make a huge profit on the Scot, who cost Aberdeen £300,000 to buy from first club St Mirren in 2015.

If McLean was to move to Glasgow, he would help fill the void left by Ryan Jack who left as a free agent and play a mentoring role to Connor Barron, who joined this summer from Aberdeen.
