Scotland vs. Hungary Euro 2024 final score, result: Barnabas Varga injury overshadows win as Csoboth settles dramatic Group A clash | Sporting News India
A 100th-minute winner from Kevin Csoboth kept Hungary in with an outside chance of making the Euro 2024 Round of 16, but their dramatic late 1-0 win was overshadowed by a serious injury to Barnabas Varga.
With the scores level at 0-0 in the second period, the match was delayed for several minutes just after the hour mark when Hungarian forward Varga was clattered in a sickening collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn.
He was left prone on the turf, with medics running onto the pitch and setting up a screen around the 34-year-old. Varga was treated for a lengthy period — with teammates including Dominik Szoboszlai visibly upset — before he eventually left the pitch on a stretcher. The veteran striker went to hospital and has been confirmed to be in a stable condition.

In light of that, events on the field were somewhat put into perspective, but when play eventually resumed it was Hungary who were the latest side to break Scotland hearts.
Knowing that they could become the first team in the nation’s history to make the knockout stages of a major tournament with a win, they piled forward in the 10 minutes of injury time that came as a result of Varga’s injury.
But a swift Hungary counter in the last minute of the injury time period ended with Csoboth latching onto a ball cut back across the box, and firing into the net to snatch victory.
Despite dominating possession, Scotland failed to have a shot on target in the first half. Hungary were not much better but had the best chance of the opening 45 minutes, with Willi Orban heading over wastefully with just goalkeeper Gunn to beat from a chipped Szoboszlai free-kick.
After the break it was much more frantic, with both sides leaving themselves open to the counter-attack as the game dragged on without a goal.
Csoboth’s last-gasp winner leaves Hungary in a fight for a place in the knockout stages as one of the tournament’s best third-placed sides. Their three-point haul — behind Group A’s top two Germany and Switzerland, who met in the other pool match at the same time — may be enough, but they will have a nervous wait
