Scotland begin just their fourth European Championship campaign in Germany

Scotland get their Euro 2024 campaign underway tonight as they look to establish themselves as a consistent European nation.

The Tartan Army ensured successive qualification for the Euros after booking their ticket to Germany, although they will hope this one is much better than the previous.

Scotland open this year’s tournament against the hosts, live on talkSPORT, and will no doubt relish the chance to shock Die Mannschaft with Europe watching.

When was the last time Scotland qualified for the Euros?

In their history as a football team, the Tartan Army have only ever qualified for the European Championships four times, including Euro 2024.

The Euros were first played in 1960, but Scotland had to wait over three decades for their first appearance in 1992.

In a potentially bad omen for this year’s tournament, Scotland failed to qualify from their group following a 2-0 defeat to Germany.

Four years later, they made the short trip to England at the 1996 edition but again failed to reach the knockout stages.

It was then a long wait to return to the UEFA tournament after that, as Scotland missed four successive editions before qualifying in 2020.

Again it was a European Championship held largely in England that Scotland found themselves drawn in a group with the Three Lions.

This time, Clarke’s men battled to a goalless draw at Wembley and had the benefit of playing their other two matches at Hampden.

However, in disastrous circumstances, Scotland lost to both the Czech Republic and Croatia on home soil to finish bottom.

Andy Robertson and co. have since bounced back to seal their place at Euro 2024, to claim back-to-back qualifications for only the second time in their history.

They will also hope to perform much better at this tournament than previous incarnations and can take plenty of positives from their qualifying performances.

Clarke’s side finished second in a group with Spain and Norway, winning five and losing just one of their eight qualifiers.
