Euro 2024 kicks off with a bang on Friday night when Steve Clarke’s Scotland face tournament hosts Germany in Munich.

It’s a mega occasion for this Scotland squad to be a part of but it’s also important they put on a good showing to remain competitive in the group.

Injuries to some key men have derailed preparations. And the performance against Gibraltar wasn’t completely inspiring. And it was a worry to throw the two-goal lead at home to Finland last time out.

But FORGET all that. It’s time for the start of the tournament and things will be completely different.

The optimism surrounding the Germans was high coming into this but you just wonder – and hope – if their stuttering performances in the warm-up games has affected that.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side – third favourites to win the competition with most bookmakers – were held 0-0 by Ukraine before a late Pascal Gross goal earned a 2-1 win over Greece, having fallen behind in the first half.

Toni Kroos’ decision to play one more tournament could be the key for them, while the speed and attacking quality in Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala will cause any team problems.

Including Scotland. There’s a range of factors that make Clarke’s side big underdogs coming into this. But then, when have we not been?

I think we’d be kidding ourselves on if we think Scotland will have anywhere near as much of the ball as the hosts will.

Kai Havertz will lead the line for Germany.

As we’ve seen in the Premier League this season, he has the capability to be a bit hot-headed. An incredible 11 yellows cards he picked up in 37 appearances.

Should Scotland set up to frustrate, he’s one that could be overly frustrated at a really good price.
