Popular attraction near major city named Scotland’s best family day out

A POPULAR attraction has been named as Scotland’s best family day out at a glitzy awards bash.

The venue scooped the top prize at the 12th edition of the Scottish Entertainment and Hospitality Awards.

The Five Sisters Zoo, a cherished wildlife conservation centre in West Lothian, was presented with the prestigious gong at a ceremony at the DoubleTree by Hilton Glasgow on May 16.

The event celebrated excellence within Scotland’s hospitality industry, recognising establishments that excel in providing outstanding experiences for their patrons.

The zoo was originally established as a garden centre by landscape gardener Brian Curran and his wife Shirley in 2005.

But it evolved into a sanctuary for unwanted pets, eventually becoming a popular attraction for visitors.

The zoo has grown to home over 180 different species of mammals, birds, and reptiles, including rescued bears and lions formerly part of travelling circuses.

And it’s dedicated to the conservation of endangered wildlife, both native and non-native species.

There is also the large indoor soft play area at the site which also has a restaurant that serves a range of hot and cold food.

The Brown Bear Cafe is cosier setting than the restaurant and serves up a delicious range of sandwiches, toasties and soups.

There is also a gift shop for little ones to pick up a souvenir.

The zoo also has several small rides near the outdoor play park, including a small safari train, swinging pirate ship and go-kart track.

Last year, the zoo rescued Asiatic Black Bear Yampil from an abandoned zoo in Ukraine.

Despite facing significant challenges, including a funding gap of £90,000 for his specialised enclosure, the zoo has rallied support from the community to ensure the bear’s well-being

His permanent home is currently being built and it is expected to be complete by Summer 2024.
