I met World Cup winner in a lift and said hello – but he completely pied me

JOHN McGINN has extra motivation for Scotland’s Euro opener after being snubbed in a lift by German legend Lothar Matthaus.

The Aston Villa star will be one of the first names on Steve Clarke‘s teamsheet for the Group A opener against the hosts in Munich on June 14.

Now he wants to shine and make Bayern Munich and Germany hero Matthaus aware of exactly who he is.

McGinn said: “I’m still a bit wounded. I said hello to Lothar Matthaus in Dubai and he absolutely pied me.

“I was actually in a lift with him and said, ‘Hello Lothar’ and he completely ignored me.

“That wasn’t that good.

“The victory over Bournemouth at the weekend was a huge one. But we’re just really tired, and we’ve been given a couple of days off to recharge our batteries.

“So rather than going to Dubai, I’m heading up the road to Scotland to get a game of golf in.”

Meanwhile, McGinn could be joined at the Euros by an increased number of Scotland teammates.

That’s because a key Uefa committee has voted in favour of expanding squad sizes for the competition.

As it currently stands, squad sizes in Germany will be limited to 23 players.

That number had been increased for both Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup when 26 players could be selected.

And managers have been lobbying for that increased number to be retained for the upcoming finals.

Uefa’s National Team Competitions Committee has reportedly voted for the expansion – the first step to the rule change being ratified in time for Germany 2024.
