£120k in active travel grants available from Scottish Borders Council

The grant awards include funding from SEStran and Transport Scotland and are available in two funds – the Community Cycling Fund and the new Active Travel Project Fund.

Following a successful launch in 2023, the Community Cycling Fund is designed to support local cycling events and assist organisations in delivering activities that inspire new and experienced cyclists.

It has £120k available in total and allows community groups, organisations and event businesses apply for grants between £5,000 and £15,000 on a first come, first serve basis.

Early applications are encouraged, and application forms are available at www.scotborders.gov.uk/cyclingfund.

The Active Travel Project Fund is aimed at supporting walking, cycling and other forms of active travel within the Scottish Borders.

The initiative provides funding between £1,000 and £20,000 for projects that promote active travel habits which enhance the quality of life for residents.

Councillor Jenny Linehan, SBC’s executive member for environment, sustainability and transport, said: “I am delighted that we continue to be able to support active travel throughout the region and provide funding to local organisations to support their own initiatives through these funds.

“Active travel is extremely important in improving health, helping the environment and encouraging residents to cut down on private car use wherever possible, so it is important for us to support this in any way we can.

“This is an exciting opportunity to create sustainable habits within our communities and I would encourage local organisations to fill out an application form as soon as possible.”
